Beating the Random Walk: a Performance Assessment of Long-term Interest Rate Forecasts

چکیده
This paper assesses the performance of a number of long-term interest rate forecast approaches, namely time series models, structural economic models, expert forecasts and combinations thereof. The predictive performance of these approaches is compared using out of sample forecast errors, where a random walk forecast acts as benchmark. It is found that for five major OECD countries, namely United States, Germany, United Kingdom, The Netherlands and Japan, the other forecasting approaches do not outperform the random walk, or a somewhat more sophisticated time series model, on a 3 month forecast horizon. On a 12 month forecast horizon the random walk model can be outperformed by a model that combines economic data and expert forecasts. Here several methods of combination are considered: equal weights, optimized weights and weights based on forecast error. It appears that the additional information contents of the structural models and expert knowledge is only relevant for forecasting 12 months ahead.

Predicting Net Discount Rates: A Comparison of Professional Forecasts, Time-series Forecasts and Traditional Methods
Previous research proposed two future net discount rate estimators that improved on naïve long-term average and random walk estimators. The proposed estimators were superior in the class of estimators that used only current and past observations on net discount rates. In this paper we consider two extensions. First we examine whether professional forecasts perform significantly better than the ...
متن کاملPredictions of Short-Term Rates and the Expectations Hypothesis of the Term Structure of Interest Rates
Despite its important role in macroeconomics and finance, the expectations hypothesis (EH) of the term structure of interest rates has received little empirical support. While the EH’s poor performance has been attributed to a variety of sources, none appear to account for the EH’s poor performance. Recent evidence (Diebold and Li, 2003; Duffee, 2002; and Carriero, et al., 2003) suggests the po...
متن کاملThe accuracy assessment of macroeconomic forecasts based on econometric models for Romania
The forecasts accuracy evaluation became a constant preoccupation of specialists in forecasting, because of the failure of predictions that caused the actual economic crisis. The objective of this research is to model and predict some economic variables corresponding too few macroeconomic blocks for Romanian economy. The forecast method is represented by econometric models. Moreover, the accura...
متن کاملThe Changing Behavior of the Term Structure of Interest Rates*
We reexamine the expectations theory of the term structure using data a t the short end of the maturity spectrum. We find that prior to the founding of the Federal Reserve System in 1915, the spread between long rates and short rates has substantial predictive power for the path of interest rates; after 1915, however, the spread contains much less predictive power. We then show that the short r...
متن کاملForecasts of US Short-term Interest Rates: A Flexible Forecast Combination Approach
This paper develops a flexible approach to combine forecasts of future spot rates with forecasts from time-series models or macroeconomic variables. We find empirical evidence that accounting for both regimes in interest rate dynamics and combining forecasts from different models helps improve the out-of-sample forecasting performance for US short-term rates. Imposing restrictions from the expe...
